Tech Tuesday: Indices and gold break out, USD/ZAR still rangebound

Tuesday, 11 August 2026

US benchmarks have paused their recent run with uptrends intact, the Top40 and gold have both produced strong upside breakouts into overbought territory, Brent crude is rebounding from oversold levels, and the USD/ZAR is attempting a bullish reversal from range support.

Inside this update:

J40 Cash Index

Not dissimilar to the move on gold, the Top40 Index has produced a strong upside breakout which has taken the price past its initial target. The move higher favours a long bias to trades on the index, although the overbought indication suggests we may be able to find long entry at better levels. Senior Analyst at Rand Swiss, Shaun Murison unpacks.

US Indices

Major US benchmarks have paused their recent run, but uptrends remain firmly intact. The Nasdaq is lagging while the Dow is leading. Senior Analyst at Rand Swiss, Shaun Murison, highlights key levels and what to watch out for next.

ZAR/USD

The USD/ZAR has moved back to range support from where it is now attempting a bullish price reversal. Senior Analyst at Rand Swiss, Shaun Murison, assesses both the range trade and breakout scenarios for the currency pair.

Commodities

Gold

We have seen a strong breakout on gold, which could be early indications of a broader trend reversal. The commodity has, however, moved into overbought territory. Senior Analyst at Rand Swiss, Shaun Murison unpacks how one might trade these contrary indications.

Brent Crude Oil

The price of Brent crude fell short of our downside target last week and has subsequently started to rebound from oversold territory. The open price gaps still suggest a slight negative bias to oil, and today’s candle could be telling as to whether we are near a top or not. Senior Analyst at Rand Swiss, Shaun Murison, takes a look.
